Creating systemic change for women and girls

Tallahassee-Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls

Oasis is committed to engaging in community-wide initiatives and providing input on public policy that will improve the lives of women and girls in our community. We proudly serve as the agency staffing the Tallahassee-Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, thanks to our partnership with the City of Tallahassee and Leon County.

About the Commission

In April 2011, The Leon County Board of County Commissioners established the Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls as a citizens’ advisory committee. In March of 2013, the City of Tallahassee proudly joined Leon County and created the new Tallahassee-Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls (Commission). By establishing and supporting this Commission, the City of Tallahassee and Leon County have taken a strong stand in support of women and girls in our community.

The primary purposes of the Tallahassee-Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls are:

  • To promote awareness of issues pertaining to women and girls in Tallahassee and Leon County
  • To serve in an advisory role, providing input to the City and County Commissions as needed

Created by the City of Tallahassee and Leon County, the Commission acknowledges that progress has been made, but “there is still work to be done before women and girls achieve economic, education and employment parity.” The resolution also acknowledges that “we must understand the current challenges that face our female citizens in order to best equip girls with the knowledge, skills, and equal access to reach for the promise of tomorrow.”

The Commission consists of 21 members.  All appointments to the Commission are on a volunteer basis, and citizens must apply to be considered for an appointment. Applications are available on the City of Tallahassee website and the Leon County website. The Oasis Center for Women and Girls proudly serves as the staffing agency for the Commission.
